A Heavenly Ladder to Bridge the Gap
VaYeTZE 1:28:10
Torah's 70 faces sparkle with brilliance as we glimpse the
mystery of its numeric frequencies and vibrations. Be it the
frequency of usage of particular words, the amount of letters or
number of words in a given passage, or the gematria implications
of words and phrases, all of these numeric values emit the divine
pulse of Torah as the subtlest flutter and at the same time as
the most vibrant throb. As we observe the numeric patterns and
implied gestures in Torah, we begin to recognize certain numeric
refrains which invite closer inspection and contemplation.
The numeric union of YiTZKHaK_208 + RiVKaH_307 suggests a
TeFiLaH_515_prayer (=208+307). This TeFiLaH_515_prayer is
directed toward HaSHeM (YH*H_26) and thus we recognize in this
prayer to Hashem the conception of 541 (=515+26). The number 541
should be understood to represent their son Yaakov. After all, it
is Yaakov who will become YiSRaEL_541. YiTZKHaK's gematria of 208
(=8x26) and YaAKoV's gematria of 182 (=7x26) not only suggest
direct sequence and connection but also reflect that both men
were fully in tune with the divine frequency of YH*H_26.
On his way from Beer Sheva to Haran, Yaakov stopped at a certain
unspecified place at night. We learn that he picked a stone from
that place, put it under his head and lay down in that place. Of
particular interest is the three word phrase VaYiSHKaV BaMaKOM
HaHUE (and lay down in that place) which introduces Yaakov's
famous dream. The gematria of this phrase is 543 and instantly
invokes the singular (3 word) name Hashem uses to identify
himself in the encounter with Moshe at the burning bush. This
name "I am that I am" EHYH ASHeR EH*H (543) occurs only once in
Torah and is the symbol of the highest possible human perception
of divine presence. As we see here, Moshe's singular power of
perception (and personal revelation) at the burning bush is
indirectly being forecast and, moreover, ascribed to Yaakov's
dream.
Yaakov dreams of the SuLaM_130 (ladder) which - similar to
SINaI_130 later on - invokes the meaning of the number 130
(=5x26), i.e. the five-fold divine nature of the means/tools
which (like the Chumash) help us to reach to the heights of the
heavens. On the sulam_ladder Yaakov beholds MaL'ACHeY ELoHIM OLIM
VeYoRDIM BO "angels of G-d going up and down on it". This phrase
has the total gematria (mispar ragil) of 615. As such, Yaakov's
vision reminds us of his point of origin/departure, MiBeER
SHeVA_615 (from Beer Sheva 1:28:10). This correlation may teach
us that Yaakov (7x26) had indeed received his father's blessing -
and the protection of [his father's place] Beer Sheva (literally
"the well of seven").
According to the traditional practices of gematria, we may unify
the divine meaning of a phrase by adding 1 (the kollel) for each
word to signify the holy spark (alef_1) in each word. The
resulting mispar musaphi of 615+5=620 reveals an important
correlation between KeTeR_620 (crown) and Yaakov's vision of
Hashem's angels. Keter_crown is the term for the highest divine
emanation of the 10 Sefirot - the major paradigm of Kabbalistic
thought. Interestingly, Keter_crown is associated in the mystic
tradition with Hashem's singular 3-word name EHYH ASHeR EH*H.
Thus, we arrive at a highly congruent, hidden message of numbers
which reveals to us that in his dream, Yaakov perceived the
Divine Presence on the most exalted level of the crown. In this
state of ultimate inspiration, Hashem speaks to Yaakov: "I am
Hashem, the G-d of your father Avraham and G-d of Isaac". The
gematria of these words (adding 1 each for Avraham and Isaac) of
676 represents the apex in as much 676 is Hashem's gematria of 26
squared, i.e. 26 x 26. We learn here of the great importance of
drawing an immediate connection between any personal experience
of divine influx and those who have preceded us and who have laid
the ground work, as it were.
Knowingly or unknowingly, we invoke a daily affirmation to this
personal-communal connection when we recite the first prayer
(Avot) of the Amidah which consists of 182 letters (7x26) and
thereby resonates with the seven-fold divine nature of Yaakov_182
who succeeded in becoming Yisrael. (Not surprisingly, the entire
week-day Amidah contains 26 instances of the Tetragrammaton,
YH*H).
Perhaps the most extraordinary moment of this story is reached
when Yaakov awakes from his dream exclaiming "Surely the Lord
exists in this place, and I, I did not know it. This two part
phrase (1:28:16) is grouped in five and three words. ACHeN YeSH
YH*H BaMaKOM HaZeH - VeANoCHI LO YaDATI. Each of the two phrase
segments have a gematria of 612. Here again, we have a number
that evokes an immediate association. It is the number for
BRIT_612 (covenant). Thus, Yaakov's dream emerges as an
affirmation and confirmation of Hashem's covenant as already
entered into with his grandfather Avraham and father Isaac.
In consideration of the 8 holy words of the entire phrase
(612+8=620), we behold a reflection of the holy Keter_620 crown
as seen by Yaakov in his dream. Upon awaking, Yaakov realizes
that he has, indeed, seen the crown, mystic manifestation of the
covenant with Hashem. Of course, the more "down-to-earth"
(practical) manifestation of BRIT_612 with the Holy One is
(612+1=613) the Torah commandments, all 613 of them. The
symmetrical duplication (mirroring) of this number is an
expression of the reciprocal nature of this covenantal
relationship.
The two-way reality brit_612 : brit_612 is expressed in many
phrases which have the total gematria of 1224 (=612+612) For
example, Psalm 111:3 and Psalm 112:3 both declare VeTZiDKaTO
OMeDeT LaAD (1224) "and his righteousness endures forever". In
other phrases, this reciprocal principle is expressed by 1226,
i.e. 613 commandments given plus 613 commandments
accepted/performed.
The account of the dream commencing with V'HiNeH in verse 28:12
through the end of verse 28:15 consists of exactly 70 words,
Yaakov's Ayin_70. Throughout Torah, this number symbolized the
SOD_70_mystery of the gap that needs to be bridged in order for
opposites to meet and harmonize. It is the distance which
separates primordial ZaCHaR_227_male from primordial
NeKeVaH_157_female. 70 also represents the critical mass
necessary to accomplish the crossing, such as the 70 souls that
came down to Egypt (with Yaakov), the shivim panim "seventy
faces" of Torah.
The dream is structured into four segments by virtue of the four
instances of VeHiNeH "and behold". In the mystical tradition, a
four-fold structure pertains to the application of the principle
(of the story) through the four kabbalistic universes,
assiah_action, yetzirah_formation, beriah_creation and
atzilut_emanation. Given the clearly deliniated structure of this
dream, much could be said about the particular number of letters
in each segement. Suffice it to say that Yaakov's use of an
EVeN_stone as a pillow is startling to say the least. Given the
ancient association of "stones" with the practice of letter
permutations in order to reach a prophetic state of mind (as
explained in the Sefer Yetzirah), it might be justified to
understand the "dream/vision" as the result of a self-induced
meditation.
Furthermore, KI VA HaSHeMeSH 28:11 may not necessarily indicate
the onset of "night" (as translated in the JPS Edition). KI VA
HaSHeMeSH literally means "for the sun came". [Note: Ordinarily,
the word BA in connection with "sun" does indeed pertain to
setting/turning, however, the extraordinary vision about to
unfold invites a very careful contemplation of the letters.]
There is also no mention of either the word erev_evening or
leila_night. It would almost appear as though "the sun came to a
halt" at its zenith - temporarily suspending the flow of ordinary
time while the array of the ladder was transfixed between the
Hey_5 of heaven (haShamaimah) and Hey_5 of earth (artzah). If we
accept - for a moment - the image of the sun "coming" rather than
"going" (regardless of the vision occuring during the day or at
night) I would propose a reversal of ordinary gematria evaluation
in the phrase KI-VA (33) HaSHeMeSH (645). Instead of the normal
addition of values, we subtract the values V'HiNeH "and behold",
we see how no less than the sun submits to (645-33=612) the
divine forces at work in order for Hashem to communicate and
establish with Yaakov the BRIT_612_covenant.
This famous story 1:28:10 through 1:28:19 consists of exactly 570
letters. In the coda verses which follow the dream, Yaakov's
makes a vow. In verse 1:28:17, we find the key word to the
meaning of this 570 letter dream. Yaakov declares that this
awesome place is "the GATEWAY to heaven". The word gateway_SHaAR
has the gematria of 570. Thus, upon sufficient contemplation, the
entire story becomes an eternal gateway to behold visions of
HKB"H. This gateway opened and became available to the forefather
of b'nei Yisrael and, to this day, it remains accessible to those
who follow his path and set out to Haran.
CODA:
Some readers may have found themselves wondering if there might
be a meaningful connection in the proximity of "I am that I am"
EHYH ASHeR EH*H_543) and YiSRaEL_541. The linking number 542 does
indeed have a special significance. In as much as 542=26 x 17 it
is yet another example of a number which is in tune with the
divine frequency of 26. Moreover, 17 generally is taken to
represent TOV_17_good. We arrive then at a truly appropriate
association with a number that is the connecting link of Hashem's
singular name (543) and Yisrael (541). 542, the link, speaks of
a holy fusion which bodes well, i.e. tov_good multiplied by/with
Hashem.
We get another helpful hint by way of 5 intentional
"misspellings" in the Chumash of the word "his commandments"
mitzvotav which is normally spelled MiTZVoTaYV but on five
occasion rendered without the yod as MiTZVoTaV (without the Yud). In this shortened
spelling, the gematria of "his commandments" is 542. The reason
that this peculiar spelling occurs five times reminds us of the
general meaning of a five-fold presence in Torah - an expression
of a special tool available to us. Thus we behold Hashem and
Yisrael inextricably linked together by mitzvotav "his
commandments" which IYH become our tool to do our part in
upholding the covenant/connection.
