The purpose of this page is to round up and summarize a number of dinghies that might be considered by others who (1) are in search of a small sailboat, (2) have similar Search Criteria and (3) wish to get an admittedly biased overview. Some dinghies are strictly daysailors while others lend themselves to bigger dreams. I came across one delightful and well-written account by Craig Ramage of a cruising adventure on a CL-16 (the Canadian version of a Wayfarer) which is a case in point. This site is the first and only Unofficial Harpoon Sailboat WebPage. Most of the material focuses on the Boston Whaler Harpoon 5.2 as well as the Harpoon 4.6. The Harpoon 6.2 is also represented and much information pertains to all three boats equally. If you have any relevant information on or about Harpoon Sailboats, please submit it to me for possible inclusion on these pages. I thought you'd have to be an olympic skiffer to have THAT kind of fun. WRONG! The MX-Ray is very approachable. So, are you ready for the wildest ride ever? If this page wets your appetite and incites your desire to get more info, you will find the M-Yachts link useful. I first saw a Johnson 18 dinghy at the Annapolis Boat Show in 1998. At the time, the boat was being marketed by Catalina. The attractive Roger Martin design was unmistakeable and left me with the thought that one day I should be sailing this boat. This page should leave no doubt about it. In the summer of 2005 I came across an internet classified of a JN18 (hull #180) available within a day's drive at a reasonable price. By then Catalina had stopped marketing this design. Too bad!
In Western Pennsylvania, there are some very excellent sailing lakes. The lake most conveniently located to Pittsburgh is Lake Arthur in Moraine State Park. If you live in South-Western PA, you might consider joining fellow dinghy sailing enthusiasts at the Moraine Sailing Club. Without a doubt, the finest sailing lake in these parts is a bit further north - Pymatuning Lake. Both of these lakes have a 10 hp restriction thus ensuring a very sailing-friendly environment. Similar in distance in the opposite direction is Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, MD. Even Lake Erie, the Presque Isle Bay and Chautauqua Lake are not too far (about 2.5 hours) to qualify as sailing destinations.
