A Summing Up 1999
This year was different in that the Harlan Family did not take a traditional family vacation. Isaac and Dad
spent a memorable couple of weeks in Germany while Mom and Aaron went on trips to visit colleges.
Yes, we can hardly believe it but the time has come to prepare to let go.
Isaac's main interest seems to revolve around aviation, be it flight simulation
designing and building model airplanes or reading and dreaming about planes.
As a result of this passion, Dad and Isaac built
a remote control airplane which they are now learning to fly. They'll have to wait till next
spring before learning to land it on their own. Isaac is greatly enjoys taking jazz piano at Duquesne University
where he is enrolled to take music theory and solfegge as well. He has been making
impressive progress.
Aaron is preparing for college. He is primarily interested in communications and therefore
is applying to colleges which have strong communications departments. He has been writing for the
school newspaper and one of his articles even won first prize on the state level. We have the
feeling the Aaron is making a good career choice. During the summer he worked as a councelor
at the JCC. Appearently, he was a great hit with the kids and many babysitting jobs have
resulted. Not a bad way to supplement his financial resources.
Iris could start a new career as mentor for college career planning. She has worked incredibly
hard to help Aaron sort out his options and has been his personal coach. It is really amazing
what goes into picking and applying to a college these days.
She continues to enjoy the challenges of working at the Parent & Child Guidance
Center and is proud of her stellar staff. In the past year, Iris has developed an exciting new program for her agency
that is called WorkPlay.
The program has been a great success with the parents and seems to have a bright future.
Chris is very busy at Mallet's. Preparations for Y2K compliance presented an additional set of
deadlines. To couterbalance the pressures of the business, Chris took a keel boat certification class in Annapolis.
Additional courses in bareboat chartering etc. have already been scheduled. His objective is
to be able to charter a larger sailboat and cruise the Chesapeake
or elsewhere - together with family, friends or sailing buddies. In the meantime,
dinghy sailing has provided a great outlet. Daysailing and racing
will continue to play a main role. As a finale to 1999, Chris leyned all seven aliot for the
Parasha Vayechi at Beth El on the last Shabbat of 1999.
A Summing Up 1998
The year 1998 has been an eventful and joyous year for the Harlan Family. Besides Isaac's Bar Mitzvah,
our family undertook a summer vacation to Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. National Parks such as
Bryce, Zion, Canyon Land, Monument Valley and Canyon De Chelly were very impressive. At the
Grand Canyon, we undertook at 7 hour hike (half way into the canyon). Notwithstanding the
initial (inevitable) adolescent moaning, a lasting memory was engraved on youthful minds.
The entire trip was unanimously declared to have been a definitive success for the whole family.
Our miniature wire-hair dachshund LUCY was a naughty girl one autumn evening.
In fact, she became virtually suicidal
when she attempted to devour an entire chocolate-pecan tort which Iris had left on the dining room table.
We never imagined that a burning dachsi-desire would cause her to (temporarily) sprout wings to propel her
onto that table top. With her short legs she usually can't even make it on the chair let alone the table.
I am happy to report that Aaron caught her half way into the act chocolate-snouted and
we were able to save our dachsi-daughter after consulting with the vet about what to do.
Isaac
is spending eighth grade in the newly renovated Jefferson Junior
High School and Aaron is a Junior at Mount Lebanon High School. As different as the are, both boys are doing
very well in school. Aside from their studies, Isaac is concentrating on piano while
Aaron
is learning to drive and beginning to prepare for his
goal to play Senior Varsity Baseball. Iris is full of inspiration about new possibilities in her
job at Parent & Child Guidance Center as well as newly emerging career objectives.
It is great to see her level of enthusiasm about continuing her education and setting ever higher
goals.
Besides managing the warehousing business, Chris has become involved in a second business opportunity
which involves the development of short line railroads and properties. It is an exciting and very
promising extension of his business activities. For Chris, the highlight of 1998 may well have been
the opportunity to davven Shacharit Services at Beth El for Rosh HaShanah.
The grand finale for 1998 was the celebration of Iris's parents' 50 wedding anniversary. Thanks to
Iris's preparations, the boys contribution and Chris's Yiddish songs, it turned out as a truly
magnificent event in honor of an extraordinary couple,
Gert and Merv
Mallet.
Isaac's Bar Mitzvah on 6-13-98 :
On June 13, 1998 our second son Isaac had his Bar Mitzvah at our family's spiritual home,
BETH EL Synagogue in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Isaac's Torah Portion was Beha'alotcha.
Everyone present agreed that he was not only exceedingly well prepared but moreover,
he chanted his Haftorah with inspiration and musicality. His older brother Aaron celebrated
his Bar Mitzvah three years earlier and on Isaac's occasion he supported his brother
by chanting one Aliah of Torah. Nu, what else could we want ?!
It was particularly thrilling to have Chris's sister Sabine and his mother (from Germany) here
for this event. Even his American Host parents, Ben and Kathy Ersland made a special trip
from Arizona.
Our exchange student Tamir Blajchman
Having benefitted from a teenage exchange program myself, Iris and I had agreed that it would
be most appropriate for us to put this special gift back into circulation by becoming a host family
ourselves. As it turned out, we were approached in 1994 to host a boy from Germany long before we
had planned to undertake this venture. But when we read Tamir's profile we just knew that this
was meant to be. Initially, he was supposed to stay for only half a year, however, it turned out
to become a whole year. Not only did we enjoy having him live with us, we also met his lovely parents
Avi and Meira
on several occasions and very much value our lasting connection to Tamir
and his family. At present, Tamir studies architecture in Aachen.
He has his own WEB PAGE. It is funny and slick, check it out.

Portrait of a Renaissance Man
This article was prompted by a music journal retrospective of the life and work of my grandfather
PETER HARLAN. My grandfather had become an internationally known instrument builder of lutes, harpsichords
and gambas as well as Early Music performance expert. Without a doubt, the
lasting legacy of his pioneer work in the field is the rebirth
and continuing growth in popularity of the Baroque and Renaissance recorders.
My contribution to this retrospective was to provide a personal glimpse of my Grosspapa.
Amongst my ancestors are quite a few notable personalities. Since I was fortunate to have
spent quite some time in his presence when I was a little "Enkel" (grandchild) I am happy to
give an account of one of these Harlans.
Family Ties
The ties that connect and bind a family throughout time and space can
sometimes be quite amazing. Let me provide a few examples:
I had always known that my father, grandfather (Peter) and great-grandfather (Walter)
bore a stunning resemblance to each other. Certainly, this is not surprising but I was
impressed by the extent when I came across two pictures in which my father and my great-grandfather
had similar poses. Though my great-grandfather was relatively older in this picture the uncanny
resemblence is nonetheless laughably obvious. Some Harlans might say that you just
don't mess with a good recipe. I leave it up to you to decide.
I can cite another example of resemblence on my mothers side. The infant on this
picture is my grandmother (mother's mother) sitting on the lap of my great-grandmother.
Leaning in from the right is my great-great-grandmother and behind them her mother, my
triple-fold great-grandmother. I consider myself very fortunate to have come
across this unique photograph.
The Harlans
Though originally of Celtish ancestry, the Harlans were Flemish Hugenots
from Flanders (a region located between the modern Netherlands and Belgium. The name
Harlan means Swamp Dweller. (in Flemish: HAR = bog/swamp). In 1685, Jean Harlan
and other Calvinists
were driven from their homes because they refused to become Catholic. Some fled to Ireland and
England, while Jean (the Elder) made his way to Germany. Some of those who emigrated to England and Ireland
subsequently crossed the big lake to settle in North as well as in South America.
They then were very fruitful and multiplied as
evidenced by this interesting American Harlan Genealogy web site.
Harlan Genealogy
Some time ago, my father, Pan Harlan, came into
possession of a special, wall-paper lined box filled with papers, newspaper clippings, documents
and a Familienchronik. It was to have
been safeguarded by him since the death of his father Peter. However, various circumstances
led to the box remaining at the castle,
Burg Sternberg,
where my Grandfather had lived
until his death in 1966.
My father clearly remembers the metal-embossed insignia
(Code of Arms) on the top of the box. Mysteriously, these had disappeared. However, as a school boy,
my father had made this sketch. The rose was on a blue background. This was a symbol of
the Hugenots.
It appears that my Great-grandfather Walter Harlan was assigned by his mother Bertha Elizabeth
Bienert the task to travel to Flanders, the place of origin of the Harlan ancestors, and research the Harlan
genealogy. Clearly, Walter Harlan did this with great attention to detail. The following information
is strictly a cursory summary - a mere fragment of his research.
We can be certain that the Harlan
surname has been in circulation at least since 1250. Since early times, Harlans seemed to
have had a propensity for travel. As a result, the Harlan name was subjected
to local alterations. The
most common alteration being the added "d" at the end of the name.
The following list of Harlan descendents may be of interest to
some Harlan visitors. The direct line for all Harlans living in Germany
begins with Jean Harlan (1662-1738) whose parents and grandparents lived
in the province of Artois (part of modern Belgium). At the age of 22, Jean had to leave
this home as a direct result of the anullment of the Edict of Nantes (Oct. 22, 1685)
by force of which the Protestants had
up to then enjoyed legal protection to exercise their religious freedom. After the infamous
Bartholomeus Night (the massacre of many protestants) and
elimination of legal protection, Jean sought and found shelter and protection in Prussia.
Several of Jean's siblings went to South America and later to North America.
As evidenced by emigration of previous Harlans to England, the Hugenot Harlans had not
felt all that secure in the practice of their religious freedom for some time.
